Érintések
Ahogy a szavak
megérintik egymást,
illetve, ahogy meg se
érintik, ahogy a tárgyak
megérintik egymást,
illetve, ahogy mégsem,
ahogy az állatok érintik
egymást, s közben
másfelé néznek, istenem,
hát ilyenek az érintések,
holott ahogy a lépcsőfokok
érintik egymást, ahogy
a versem érint egy pillangót,
bármiről legyen is szó,
csak úgy érdemes.
Touches
Only as words
touch each other,
or rather do not even
connect, as objects
touch one another,
or rather not at all,
as animals touch
each other, while eyeing
something else, by God,
this is how touches go,
whereas only as stairsteps
touch each other,
or as my poems touch a butterfly,
regardless of the subject matter,
is a touch worth my while.
Mindenre volt időnk
Volt, volt idő elég.
Mindenre volt időnk.
Volt idő elkárhozásra,
volt idő szerepre.
Nem szólhatunk, nem panaszolhatunk.
Volt időnk elég.
Volt idő észrevenni,
amint a múlttal megrakott teherautók
kiporzanak a kis falusi iskolákból,
egyenesen a dögtemetők felé.
Volt, volt idő.
Volt időnk elég.
Volt idő észrevenni
a sárba bukó zászlót s hogy rendjeleiket
mily kapkodva tisztogatják
le a tisztesek.
Volt idő elég.
Volt időnk kibetűzni
a felgyújtott lugasok üzenetét,
az aranyló kulcsok fekete hieroglifáit,
a holdba zúduló ménesek
itt hagyott patkónyomát.
Volt, volt idő.
Volt idő elég,
hogy az örökmozgót feltaláljuk,
hogy a jéghegyeket elolvasszuk,
hogy a szárnyainkat megragasztgassuk, mindenre volt időnk,
volt időnk elég.
S már látjuk: kulcsaink nem találnak
se mennyek, se poklok ajtajába.
A jövő sercegve, mint a gyújtózsinór
végigfut a talpunk alatt.
A langyosakat, ím kiköpi szájából az úr.
We had time for everything
We had time for everything.
Yes, we had plenty of time.
We made time to earn damnation,
playing parts in presentations.
We cannot grumble, can’t complain.
We had enough time.
We had enough time to notice
the row of trucks loaded with relics of our past,
leaving the courtyards of village schools
headed straight for disposal.
Yes, we had time.
We had plenty of time.
We had time to notice
how flags tumbled into the mud
and with how much haste
the flustered officials cleaned
their medals.
There was plenty of time.
We had time to decipher
the message of the pergolas set ablaze,
of the black hieroglyphs on shining golden keys,
of the hoof-prints of stallion herds
bolting to the Moon.
Yes, we had time.
We had plenty of time,
to invent the perpetual motion machine,
to melt the icebergs,
to constantly mend our wings.
We had time for everything.
Oh yes, we had time enough.
But look!
We can already see:
our keys
don’t match the locks
of Heaven
or those
of Hell.
Future sizzles like gunpowder that runs
under our feet towards the powder-keg.
This is how God reveals – to the undecided –
the meaning of rejection.
A fűnyíró kitűnő állapotáról
Vágom a füvet.
Leselkedem.
Időm teljesen lefoglalja,
hogy én vagyok az édenkert
egyszerű fűnyírója.
Iszonyatosan nő a fű és a gaz
az édenkertben. Járkálok
a fűnyírógéppel, gondozom
a kertet, hogy benn,
a sétányok mélyén, a homályban
is járhatók legyenek az utak.
Sajnos, a helyet ma már
a katasztrófa-turisták is
felfedezték, tisztem, hogy
becsülettel kiszolgáljam
őket. Egyre többen s egyre
szervezettebben járják e
vidéket, szívrepesve várva,
hogy rögzíthessék
a történelmi pillanatot,
amikor az édenkert
egyszer csak, hirtelen
szertefoszlik.
Lesem a pillanatot én is,
fűnyíróval a kezemben,
kitartok, az utolsó
leheletemig.
A fűnyíró kitűnő állapotban van.
Vágom a füvet.
Leselkedem.
Vágok.
Bizakodom.
Vágok.
Bizakodom.
Az utolsó pillanatig.
Hátha Ádám mégsem
azt a jól ismert utat választja
a döntő pillanatban.
About the excellent condition of the lawn-mower
I cut the grass
then I watch.
As the humble caretaker of
the Garden of Eden
I have no time for leisure.
Weeds and grass grow something
awful here. I roam about
with the lawn-mower, taking care
of the garden, so that
even the shadowy more remote
walkways are always walkable.
Unfortunately, thrill-seeking tourists
have discovered this place
lately, and I have been assigned
to attend to all their whims and
wishes.Their numbers are growing,
and are ever more organized,
eagerly awaiting
to record
the historical moment
when the Garden of Eden
suddenly will break up,
melt away.
I keep an eye out for that myself,
with lawn-mower in hand,
holding out, to my last
breath.
The lawn-mower is in excellent condition.
I cut the grass.
I watch.
I cut.
I place my trust.
I cut.
I hope.
To the last moment.
What if Adam doesn’t choose
in that fatal moment
the well-known path.
